Totem Pole Rededication Ceremony Recap

Cultus Lake Park Board and staff were joined yesterday by the Malloway family, Soowahlie Council, local band Chiefs, dignitaries, and members of the public to celebrate the rededication of the totem pole to the late Chief Richard Malloway.

In January 2022, the Cultus Lake Park Board approved for the thirty-year-old totem to be restored by the original carver, Dr. Francis Horne Sr. Upon completion of the pole, the Board and staff prepared for its relocation to the entrance of the Cultus Lake Park office, increasing visibility and heightening awareness of its historical significance.

The ceremony welcomed family and friends to share memories of Chief Richard Malloway’s sacrifices, tenacity, and influence for his people and community. The celebration closed with the traditional family song paying tribute to the legacy of the late Chief.

On behalf of the Cultus Lake Park Board and staff, we wish to extend our sincerest gratitude to all of those that contributed and participated in yesterday’s historical moment.
